Cleaner Production Awards to Recognize Best Performing Industries

Kigali September 14th, 2016-Rwanda will, on Friday 16 September 2016, hold the 2nd edition of the national Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production (RECP) Awards.

The awards recognize the best performing industries in Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production technologies. The industries to be rewarded are those located within the Lake Victoria Basin in Rwanda.

Industries under the resource efficiency and cleaner production programme under LVEMP II Project were evaluated based on a set of criteria, including (1) the consumption and use of resources such as energy, water, and raw materials, point-source pollution reduction; management commitment to clean and environment-friendly operations and the company’s openness, benefit sharing, compliance with effluent standards as well as corporate social responsibility, among others.

Eight best performing industries will be awarded in the categories of water use, waste management, waste water management and energy use. In total, 25 industries applied to participate in the awards.

The Minister for Trade and Industry Francois Kanimba, said: “Rwanda targets to be a middle-income and green economy and it is imperative that our industries remain committed and contribute to that vision. This initiative is a step forward towards raising awareness on the necessity to promote green industries.”

“We also believe that having green industries will improve the competitiveness of our products on the market,” he added.

RECP is a strategy aiming at enhancing efficiency of consumption of resources (energy, water and material) and reducing pollution from industries. RECP technologies reduce the costs of production and limit the levels of environment pollution through minimization of waste and reduction of pollution intensity of industries.

The inaugural awards were held last year in May. At the time, seven industries rewarded and Sulfo Industries was the overall winner.
