Awareness workshop on promoting resource efficient and cleaner production (recp) in schools, hospitals, industries and domestic use. musanze district stakeholders workshop,(19-20 september 2013)

RRECPC has organized a TWO days training workshop on 19-20 September 2013 to present the direct and in-direct benefits from this concept to Musanze district stakeholders in order to make good businesses sense through taking care of energy, water, material, waste and chemicals. The technical and financial support was provided from One UN through UNIDO and UN HABITAT.

The workshop was attended by  stakeholders from various sectors mainly

  • Industries
  • Health Center
  • Hotels
  • Schools
  • PSF( Chamber of Industries) and District office representatives

Opening remarks was provided by both UN-HABITAT Coordinator and Vice Mayor in Charge of Economic Affairs.

They insisted on Resource Efficiency and Cleaner production program within institutions, benefits that are resulting from adoption of RECP from institution side and Rwanda in general.

The Vice Mayor in Charge of Economic Affairs urged the participants to eagerly learn and implement the RECP program adding that it should be seen within the participating institutions by innovative ways”Guhanga Udushya” in their daily work.

This workshop served as a continuous program for some industries and Hotels whereas it was awareness for others leading to a strategic starting partnership for some stakeholders in Musanze district. 

Day one of the workshop included different presentation were done by Rwanda Resource Efficiency and Cleaner production Center staff based on five thematic areas Water, Energy, Materials, Chemicals and waste as annexed in the workshop program.

The significant issues in different sectors addressed by the presenters were:

 

  • Energy consumption and associated costs (electrical and steam) including Lightning, Heating, cooling in industries/Hotels together with Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) 
  • Water consumption, wastewater generation and wastewater management.
  • Chemicals use, storage and disposal
  • Efficient use of other raw Materials and 
  • Solid waste management and 

The workshop also included implementation of some of RECP components such as walkthrough which served as demonstration cases within preselected industries to showcase direct and indirect benefits of RECP. This was done on Day two and visits were done within La Palme Hotel, local banana wine factory CETRAF and Health Center Muhoza.

2. Target and Expected outcomes

The key issues in implementing RECP are how to minimize resource consumption, waste generation and overall impact on the operational cost reduction and environment performance while maintaining the highest possible quality of service.

RECP Program addressed the source of these problems and provided ways of sustainable solutions to these challenges through reuse, reduce, recovery and recycling.

 

 OUTPUTS AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES

  • Awareness on RECP raised to at least 50 institutions located in Musanze district 
  • Knowledge on source reduction of wastes and the best practices, the principles and approaches of Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production.
  • Commitment to adopt RECP from at least 80% of participating institutions
  • In-plant assessment within at least two participating institutions as a showcase of RECP principles and best practices
  • PRE-SMEs toolkit training, toolkit provided and implemented in the participating institutions

3. Closing remarks and Recommendations

The company visits were concluded by participants’ presentations whereby several key findings/observations were raised and discussed on as presented in the key findings table.

In closing, a number of recommendations were presented and outcomes are presented below

 

  • Convince the Management on adoption of RECP by End September
  • Form CP teams
  • Organize CP trainings within and outside company premises(for knowledge transfer and continuous exchange of experience)October 2013
  • Initiate RECP audits by already trained participants to prepare December forum (best practices adopted and savings made as a result of RECP program implementation)
  • Suggest rewarding system based on RECP saving to motivate staff
  • Advocacy by Chamber of Industry
  • Prepare Stakeholders Forum in December 2013

After the drafting the implementation plan RRECPC Coordinator congratulated all participants for the hard work, daily presence, valuable inputs and a shown a thirsty to full commit themselves to adoption of RECP in their institutions/companies.

The official closing remarks were given by both UN-HABITAT Program Coordinator and District Office representative. In their remarks they thanked again the participants and urged them to eagerly go and share what they have learnt with the top management as to quick get their commitment and be able to implement RECP for better and fruitful results. They also promised their support in general and UN-HABITAT Program Coordinator stressed the importance of having easy access to RECP information, gaps identified and options to be adopted.
